2008 Mother’s Day Contest Winners

Most Inspiring
Anne Baker
nominated by husband Jack
Our son passed away in 2004. My wife has been able to pull her self together every day to take care of the rest of our family, continue to hold down a career and be a loving wife. What more is there to say?

Hardest Working
Peggy Nelson
nominated by friend and coworker Barbara
Peg Nelson is a Nurse Practitioner and Director of the Pain and Palliative Care Service at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital. Peg started this program about nine years ago to help patients and their families facing the end of life. The program helps with pain, spiritual needs, end of life issues, and makes sure that "No One Dies Alone" (another volunteer program she also started 3 years ago). This is not just a job to Peg it is her life’s mission to help those patients at end of life no matter their background or financial situation. She inspires me and her whole team everyday and reminds us we must take care of the “person within”. Peg is a single mom of four wonderful children, Steve (21), Juli (18) full time student at MSU following in her mom footsteps, Connor (eighth grader), and Phil a friend of Steve's who lives with the Nelson's but is considered one of the family. Peg somehow seems to make it to all school and church functions for the children even though she is on call 24/7. Both Steve and Juli volunteer at the hospital and I am sure that when Connor is old enough he will want to also. Peg never takes time for herself she is always doing for others. I look at her and know that because of who and what she is and what she has taught me that I strive everyday to touch a life as she has touched mine. Thank you for taking the time to consider Peg Nelson for the hardest working mom this Mother's Day!

Most Humorous
Lisa Mix
nominated by son Brian
(We laughed and laughed at this nomination,
Brian must have inherited his sense of humor from his mom!)
My mom deserves this because she takes a lot of crap from me and my brothers. We treat her with no respect when all she does is give. She works all day while still dealing with our stupid decisions and calls from the principal or teachers, and then comes home and still takes care of us. She does the dishes, cleans the house, and makes sure we all have clean clothes. She is the last one down at night and the first one up in the morning. We want to see her get a day for herself.
